Meet George Weah

A Liberian story known around the world.

George Manneh Weah is a former President of the Republic of Liberia, an internationally celebrated footballer and a longtime humanitarian. Born in Monrovia on 1 October 1966, he rose from Liberian football to AS Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, becoming the 1995 Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year. He was elected Senator for Montserrado County in 2014 and President in 2017, serving from January 2018 to January 2024. After narrowly losing the 2023 runoff, he conceded and supported a peaceful constitutional transfer of power. He remains active in public life and declared his intention in July 2026 to contest the 2029 presidential election.
